Nancy Baird Disappears, Believed to Be a Victim of Ted Bundy
July 4th, 1975- On this day, Nancy Baird, a 23-year-old gas station attendant, vanished without a trace from her workplace in Layton, Utah. She was last seen working alone at the Fina gas station, just minutes before her shift was due to end. Her car, purse, and personal items were left undisturbed and there were no immediate signs of a struggle.
At the time, Nancy was a single mother, known for being responsible and reliable, which made her sudden disappearance all the more alarming.
Her case unfolded during a wave of disappearances involving young women across the western United States, many of whom were later linked to serial killer Ted Bundy. Although Nancy’s body was never found, and there was no direct evidence connecting Bundy to her case, investigators believed she was most likely one of his unconfirmed victims.
Bundy never specifically admitted to killing Nancy Baird. However, shortly before his 1989 execution, he confessed to murdering 30 young women in seven states during the 1970s.
While it’s widely accepted that Nancy may have been one of Bundy’s early Utah victims, nearly 50 years later, doubts remain—both about the investigation itself and whether Bundy was truly responsible, or simply a convenient explanation.
Nancy Baird’s disappearance remains officially open and unsolved.
